Top place to visit in San Francisco especially if you are travelling with kids is the Aquarium of the Bay, the only one in the world that focuses on the marine animals living in the San Francisco Bay area and neighbouring waters. The Aquarium experience is in three parts: Discover the Bay, Under the Bay and Touch the Bay. The first part is an introduction to the marine life in the Bay area before moving on to the most spectacular part of the visit which is a 300 feet long walk-through crystal clear tunnel. You are actually under 700.000 gallons of filtered ocean water with 20.000 marine animals swimming around and above you including swirling schools of Anchovies, giant Sea Bass and colourful Sea Stars in the fist part of the tunnel before moving on to deeper waters where you’ll find the spectacular Sevengill sharks, bat rays and giant skates. The last part is all about making contact with some of the fish that you can actually touch gently. Throughout the visit you can take advantage of the team of marine biologists that are available to answer all your questions. The Aquarium has a rich event calendar and next month is Sharktober. The whole month of October will be about sharks with daily activities including shark related scavenger hunts, touching of live leopard sharks and shark films. Special shark feeding presentations are held on Thursdays and Sundays at 1.30 pm.
Don’t miss out the special Sharktober Family Sleepover that is taking place on October 17th from 7.30 pm to 9am. This event is open to family with kids between 5 and 11 and is a very popular event so if you are interested in sleeping with the sharks you should book early.
